Echo Archive is our latest online project, recently commissioned by Opera North, involving workshops, live performances, custom-built audio software and a site-specific installation.
The work is based around an inner-city area of Leeds called Little London, much of which is currently under threat of demolition from a Private Finance Initiative.
Following months of fieldwork, worksessions with schoolchildren and recording sessions in the stairwells of Little London tower blocks, the work is now completed. It is based around two key elements.
Firstly, we created an instrument that allows you to compose using the sounds and music of the area. Moving away from traditional interfaces, we developed a text-based application that makes composition intuitive and accessible to users of all ages. Users can also record the results of their performances as wav files.

Secondly, there's a website where you can download the instrument, upload your files, and listen to other people's compositions. So download, tinker and get mixing...

Echo Archive was created in collaboration with ObjectiveSubject and was made possible by the kind support of the Paul Hamyln Foundation.
