Acrux Variations is a live performance project featuring David Gunn (Incidental) and Victor Gama (Pangeiart).

Luso-Angolan instrument designer and musician Victor Gama has been a long-time collaborator for Incidental, since our very first project Folk Songs for the Five Points. In this multimedia show, Gama performs on his unique ‘acrux' while David Gunn adds live electronics, created entirely from live resampling of Gama.

The work also features video projections taken from Gama's field trips to the Namibe desert on the South-Western coast of Angola.

"Gama is joined on laptop by digital artist and sometime collaborator David Gunn ... As this evening's improvised "Acrux Variations" demonstrates, "dialoguing" (his term) is key... Seated, he quickly loops some of the acrux's sounds, building up a mesh of tones. Ghostly clangings and delicate marimba-like patterns ensue while Gunn and Gama feed excerpts back and forth, each of modulating, refining and transforming what came before"

Louise Grey, The Wire Magazine (November 2009)

Acrux Variations debuted at Kings Place Festival, Sept 2009. The next show is currently scheduled for Oct 22nd 2009 at the Arnolfini Centre, Bristol. We're hoping to upload some excerpts from the Bristol show shortly, so check back soon.
